NGK History

For almost a century NGK INSULATORS, Ltd. has continually expanded to a successful worldwide operating company.

1919: NGK INSULATORS, Ltd. is established as a spin-off of Noritake’s Insulator Division.

1965: NGK’s first overseas distribution company: NGK INSULATORS OF AMERICA, LTD. (now known as NGK-LOCKE, INC.) incorporated

1973: NGK’s first overseas production base LOCKE INSULATORS, INC. (USA) incorporated.

1976: Manufacturing and marketing of ceramic catalyst carrier HONEYCERAM for vehicle exhaust gas purification commences.

1982: NGK INSULATORS, Ltd. receives Ford Q1 Award.

1985: NGK CERAMICS EUROPE S.A. is established, starting production of HONEYCERAM in Belgium. NGK EUROPE GmbH is established in Germany.

1986: The written style of the Japanese trade name is changed. Katakana is now used for the part, „Gaishi (i.e. Insulator),“ where Chinese characters were formerly used.

1989: Production of diesel particulate filters (DPF) begins.

1996: The automotive ceramics division acquires ISO 9001 certification. P.T. NGK CERAMICS INDONESIA is established as a production base of HONEYCERAM in Indonesia.

1999: NGK INSULATORS, Ltd. celebrates 80th anniversary of its foundation. The accumulated production of HONEYCERAM reaches 400 million. Beginning of NOx sensor production.

2000: NGK CERAMICS SOUTH AFRICA (PTY) Ltd. is established as a production base for HONEYCERAM in South Africa.

2001: NGK CERAMICS SUZHOU Co., Ltd. and NGK Technocera Suzhou Co., Ltd. are established in China to produce HONEYCERAM and kiln furniture respectively. Accumulated production of HONEYCERAM reaches 500 million units.

2003: NGK CERAMICS POLSKA SP. Z O.O. is established as a production base of diesel particulate filters in Poland.

2005: NGK Participates in the 2005 World Exposition, Aichi, Japan with the Water Lab exhibit.

2006: NGK EUROPE GmbH receives the Volkswagen Group Award for achievements in the area of entrepreneurial performance.

2009: NGK INSULATORS, Ltd. celebrates its 90th anniversary.

2010: NGK EUROPE GmbH celebrates its 25th anniversary. NGK INSULATORS, Ltd. and Continental AG receive the Automotive News PACE Award for their joint development of the Smart NOx Sensor.

2011: Accumulated HONEYCERAM production reaches 1 billion. Accumulated production of diesel particulate filters reaches 10 million.

2012: NGK CERAMICS SOUTH AFRICA (PTY) Ltd. is nominated Supplier of the Year by General Motors South Africa.

2013: NGK INSULATORS, Ltd. wins The Ceramic Society of Japan Technology Award for their Smart NOx Sensor. NGK EUROPE GmbH earns EAME Supplier Award for best in class Collaboration.

2014: Prepare mass production of gasoline particulate filters at NGK CERAMICS POLSKA SP. Z O.O.
NGK Automotive Ceramics USA, Inc. is nominated amongst 17 others as top US supplier by Cummins. NOx Sensor wins Invention Prize at National Commendation for Invention.
